CAC awards $5,000 in grants

The Community Advisory Committee (CAC) approved five $1,000 mini-grants yesterday, during its board meeting. The $5,000 will be awarded to five programs:

Nevada PEP- “Include Me” Disability Awareness Public Program:
Nevada PEP provides disability awareness outreach for pre-schools. The program will use puppet shows to educate children about various disabilities to help them become more comfortable with the disabled.

Best Buddies Nevada:
The Buddy Ambassador program matches the intellectually and developmentally disabled with non-disabled peers to improve communication skills while attending leadership conferences.

PACE Program: Programmed Approach to Career Education
The program will purchase iPods, laptops and software for a classroom in Clark county. The technology will help children with autism and other disabilities develop job skills, such as learning to copy, fax and use computers to create resumes and search for jobs.

WCSD Student Support Services Inclusion Specialists:
The fund will provide support and training for more inclusive practices across the Washoe County School District.

Nevada Disability Advocacy & Law Center:
The NDALC will run 10 voter workshops to promote education and training for individuals with disabilities to empower them to be a powerful voting demographic that can better affect voting policy.
